Poultry houses are a dusty environment, and gas heaters attract dust which in turn affects the efficiency and operation of the heaters.
Dust will clog up the burner, upsetting the gas/air mix and lead to poor combustion and production of carbon monoxide which can be lethal. Dust will also affect the electrical connections on the gas valve or sail switch, causing short circuits.
The easy way to prevent issues is to clean the heater at each crop turnround. A soft paint brush and an air blower (some of my customers use a leaf blower) will help remove dust, whilst a bottle brush inserted from the bottom of the burner will clean the inside of the burner tube (venturi) and ensure the flame is clean, stable and blue.
Having said all that, poultry farmers have a busy time of it at turnround, and adding heater cleaning to the jobs list may not be something they have time for. Our service offering includes heater cleaning and servicing, either at each turnround or on an annual basis as required.
